Phosphoglucose Isomerase Variability in Sympatric Populations of Mediterranean Species
نویسنده
چکیده
Genetic variability at the phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) locus was compared in Mediterranean sympatric populations of Patella aspera, P. coerulea and P. lusitan~ca. P. aspera and P. coerulea show PG1 patterns much alike, while P. lusitanica exhibits a more anodal general zone of mobility of its PG1 allozymes. The differentiation of P. lusitanica pattern may be tentatively interpreted as the result of a selective action, which enabled this species to extend its range in the upper intertidal zone. However, all the most frequent PG1 allozymes of the Mediterranean Patella species exhibited the same degree of thermostability. Such findings suggest that, in the differentiation process of the PG1 locus in Mediterranean limpets, one or more factors other than temperature may have been involved.

The effect of mating system differences on nucleotide diversity at the phosphoglucose isomerase locus in the plant genus Leavenworthia.
To test the theoretical prediction that highly inbreeding populations should have low neutral genetic diversity relative to closely related outcrossing populations, we sequenced portions of the cytosolic phosphoglucose isomerase (PgiC) gene in the plant genus Leavenworthia, which includes both self-incompatible and inbreeding taxa. On the basis of sequences of intron 12 of this gene, the expect...
متن کاملDiversifying Selection Underlies the Origin of Allozyme Polymorphism at the Phosphoglucose Isomerase Locus in Tigriopus californicus
The marine copepod Tigriopus californicus lives in intertidal rock pools along the Pacific coast, where it exhibits strong, temporally stable population genetic structure. Previous allozyme surveys have found high frequency private alleles among neighboring subpopulations, indicating that there is limited genetic exchange between populations. Here we evaluate the factors responsible for the div...
متن کاملEffects of Corridors on Genetics of a Butterfl y in a Landscape Experiment
To investigate the possible role of landscape connectivity on the genetic structure of isolated populations, we examined the effects of habitat corridors on the population genetics of a vagile butterfl y species, Junonia coenia, within a largescale, experimental system. Using allozyme electrophoresis, a total of nine loci were identifi ed and scored, six of which exhibited polymorphism. Our dat...

The Zymomonas mobilis gene encoding phosphoglucose isomerase (pgi) was cloned by genetic complementation of an Escherichia coli pgi mutant. An enzyme assay and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis confirmed the presence of excess amounts of phosphoglucose isomerase in E. coli clones carrying the Z. mobilis pgi gene. The pgi gene is present in only one copy on the Z. mobilis...

The geographic distributions of mercury-tolerant allozyme genotypes of the enzyme phosphoglucomutase in the shrimp Palaemon elegans and the enzyme phosphoglucose isomerase in the marine gastropod Monodonta turbinata were compared in a mercury-polluted site versus several unpolluted sites on the Israeli coast of the Mediterranean sea. We conclude that in both phosphoglucomutase and phosphoglucos...
